Daily Devotional: Psalms 145:1-7

Ps 145:1-7

1 I will exalt you, my God the King; I will praise your name for ever and ever. 2 Every day I will praise you and extol your name for ever and ever. 3 Great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; his greatness no one can fathom. 4 One generation will commend your works to another; they will tell of your mighty acts. 5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. 6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. 7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

It doesn’t take long being around most people and one can find out what is really important to them. One quickly learns the passions, desires and concerns of the other because the conversation will take a turn toward those things. It may be their favorite football team, their passion for hunting, their desire to dress in the latest styles, or work, or hobbies, children, grandchildren or their possessions such as cars, houses or guns. Some only want to talk of all the problems in their lives and how badly everything seems to always be; their health, their finances or how unfair others are with them. Still others seem to always talk about how God has blessed them and how good God is to them and how great it is to be a Christian and have God’s umbrella of love over them.

We once had a doctor friend who said he could tell what was important to a person by putting them under anesthesia and seeing what they talked about as they woke up. Some began cursing and using filthy words while others sang praises to God. Some bemoaned all the evil in the world while others talked of the glories of heaven. Jesus said from our hearts come the issues of life.

What a great difference it would make on the world around us if all of us were filled with praise and spoke of the goodness of God as readily as we do sports or other earthly things! What if we got as excited about worshipping God as we do about winning a championship title (even a city soccer league title). God is so good to us and has blessed us so much. We need to be overflowing with praise every hour of every day in our lives.

O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for your great majesty, your splendor that is beyond my ability to grasp, your love so abundant that I cannot imagine and your goodness shown in more ways than I can know. Thank you for your peace that surpasses understanding. Help me wrap my mind around your promise to work all things for good in my life as I allow your Spirit to unfold your purpose in me. Help me work out what you work in me so that your will for me is never fettered or hindered. I pray in the name of Jesus my example.
