Daily Devotional: Psalms 139:13-18

Ps 139:13-18

13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother's womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place. When I was woven together in the depths of the earth, 16 your eyes saw my unformed body. All the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. 17 How precious to me are your thoughts, O God! How vast is the sum of them! 18 Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand. When I awake, I am still with you.

God knew each of us before we were born. Since God lives in eternity, he is not hampered with time as we are here on earth. So when God says something is going to happen, it has already happened in reality, just not physically in our space and time. But when God says it, it will always come to pass exactly as he has spoken. His word never fails.

This is one of the greatest proofs of the veracity of the Scriptures. God spoke in many different ways and through many different people (and angels) and every detail came to pass just as he said it would happen. At times he named kings by name before they were born and even before their kingdom had become known and it took place according to his word. So many predictions were made about the coming Messiah and every one of them were fulfilled. While someone might try to explain some of them during his lifetime and how he may have manipulated things to make them happen, it would be impossible for Jesus to make happen the ones made about his birth, his death and his resurrection come true. God spoke, he is in control and all things happen according to his word.

God has spoken today and has promised to be with us. His thoughts, his plans and his ways are often beyond our imagination. We seek to know him and we try to learn his word but even at our best we are so far short of understanding his mind. Yet, at the same time, he has made simple the things we really need to know to be able to live for him and to serve him. Profound but simple: trust him.

O God, I thank you for your wonderful love. I stand in awe at your majesty, your power and your wisdom. It is truly beyond my imagination that you can know the future long before it unfolds here on earth. It is so easy for me to doubt your power and yet I know you are in control of all things and are working them to your purpose. Give me a yielding spirit to allow you to work in me. Give me wisdom to know where you want me to be used and in what ways. Give peace to those who are in pain and turmoil. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior.
