Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:13-18

Psalms 106:13-18

13 But they soon forgot what he had done and did not wait for his counsel. 14 In the desert they gave in to their craving; in the wasteland they put God to the test. 15 So he gave them what they asked for, but sent a wasting disease upon them. 16 In the camp they grew envious of Moses and of Aaron, who was consecrated to the LORD. 17 The earth opened up and swallowed Dathan; it buried the company of Abiram. 18 Fire blazed among their followers; a flame consumed the wicked.

How soon we forget! It is so easy for us to read the stories of Israel on their journey from Egypt to Canaan and then think we would have not been like them in the many things they did against God. He delivered them from their bondage, nourished them, gave the guidance and protected them along the way. Yet with all these blessings, they would often forget his promises, doubt his abilities or question his wisdom and then go their own stubborn and foolish way.

God has delivered us from bondage much worse than physical slavery. We have been given freedom from the slavery of Satan and sin. We have been given freedom to serve God in spirit and in truth and yet how often do we neglect to even worship him, serve him and follow his will? We often forget that living for God actually provides us with an abundant life and frees us from all the malice, hate, envy and jealousy that the world has to contend with. We can live free from guilt because he has forgiven us and continues to do so as we walk in his light. He has set us free in Jesus Christ but do we forget?

God provided heavenly food for them call manna. The only “trick” was that they had to gather it every day or it would spoil. He provides us with all the nourishment we need in his word but do we take our fill each day? Some people only take his nourishment when they go to church and then wonder why they are not growing spiritually and seem to be constantly struggling in their attempt to walk with God. We, like Israel, must take his food into our hearts every day or we will forget his mighty deeds in in our lives and we will slowly drift from him.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your forgiveness. I know that no other gift from you is as great as this one. In your wisdom and in your love you gave your Son to die for me so I can live for you now and with you in eternity. I realize I am weak and often fail to live up to your will. I do forget to take your nourishment at times and to enjoy your blessings. Please continue to forgive me and give me a greater desire to be like you with a stronger commitment to let your Spirit guide me and mold me. Help me learn to love others as you love me so I can have the peace in my heart and my life that only you can give. I pray in the name of Jesus.
