Daily Devotional: Psalm 91:1-8

Psalm 91:1-8

1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, "He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust." 3 Surely he will save you from the fowler's snare and from the deadly pestilence. 4 He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. 5 You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, 6 nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. 7 A thousand may fall at your side, ten thousand at your right hand, but it will not come near you. 8 You will only observe with your eyes and see the punishment of the wicked.

When you get to thinking that your life is bad and it seems that everything has fallen in on you, take a trip to your local nursing home. See the people there who are helpless and for whom life is hopeless. Even worse, visit with those whose families have put them there and seemingly forgotten they even exist. One lady who had suffered a stroke and was partially paralyzed, had two children but it had been over two years since either had been to see her. Another never had visitors so when the nurses were asked about her, we were told they did not know if she even had any family – none had ever been there.

But even if we become like these, we will always have a friend that will be with us every day. This friend will never leave us and will not forget about us. He will even make sure that whatever we face, he will help us through each day, one day at a time, one moment at a time. This friend is Jesus. He knows what we are suffering because no one has ever been left more alone than he. We are told concerning his close companions that when he was arrested “they all fled.”

The wise man says there is a friend that sticks closer than a brother. Jesus is both our friend and our brother. When Satan attempts to attack us, we have that older brother to protect us. When we fall, he is there to pick us up. When all seems to be lost, he will be with us and make sure we have what we need to survive. In fact, he loves us so much, he has already given his life for us.

O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for giving your Son to die in my place, for my sin. I know there is no way I can repay you for what you have done for me. I ask you to accept my humble attempt to praise you and to honor you in my life. Use me to help others and serve them to bring honor and glory to you. Give me the peace and joy that only comes from knowing and trusting you. Fill me with your Spirit so I can love others as you love me. Help me forgive as you have forgiven me. Thank you for all your blessings. I pray in the name of Jesus.
