Daily Devotional: Psalms 35:7-10

Ps 35:7-10

For without cause they hid their net for me; without cause they dug a pit for my life. Let destruction come upon him when he does not know it! And let the net that he hid ensnare him; let him fall into it—to his destruction! Then my soul will rejoice in the Lord, exulting in his salvation. All my bones shall say, “O Lord, who is like you, delivering the poor from him who is too strong for him, the poor and needy from him who robs him?” (ESV)

2 Thess 3:1-3

Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored, as happened among you, and that we may be delivered from wicked and evil men. For not all have faith. But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one. (ESV)

On more than one occasion, Paul writes that “the Lord is faithful”. One of the times, he adds that this is a trustworthy statement. We can count on the Lord to live up to his end of the bargain (his covenant with us). He will never let us down and his word will never fail. His promises are sure. The Lord is faithful!

But almost all of the Lord’s promises are conditional. If we serve him, he will bless us and he will take care of us. If we reject him, he will punish us. From the very beginning of time, in the Garden, this has always been the case. He told Adam and Eve if they were faithful to him, he would bless them but if they ate from that one tree, they would die. They ate that fruit and both sin and death entered.

Along with sin came the hard work, the thorns and thistles, and for the woman came the pain of childbirth. All of the problems we face in life can be traced back to Adam and Eve rejecting the word of God and not keeping their part of the covenant with God. Until this happened, they had complete fellowship with God. They had all their needs supplied. Their world had no pain, sorrow, or shame.

We must trust God. He is faithful! The question for us today is: are we faithful to him? Do we really honor him in what we say? Do we follow him in all we do? Do we keep the “golden rule” and treat others the way we want to be treated? Have we learned to turn the other cheek, to forgive without limits? Do we trust God?

O Lord God, my Father in heaven, holy and reverend is your name! I praise the name of Jesus your Son who is worthy to receive glory and honor! Thank you for loving me enough that you know me, you know my name, and you actually care about me and my problems in life. Help me focus on the good things in my life and not be negative or complain. I thank you and praise you for all the good things you have blessed me with. Use me to encourage others to live for you and to serve you. Give peace to your people. I pray in the name of Jesus.
