Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:19-22

Ps 31:19-22

Oh, how abundant is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you and worked for those who take refuge in you, in the sight of the children of mankind! In the cover of your presence, you hide them from the plots of men; you store them in your shelter from the strife of tongues. Blessed be the Lord, for he has wondrously shown his steadfast love to me when I was in a besieged city. I had said in my alarm, “I am cut off from your sight.” But you heard the voice of my pleas for mercy when I cried to you for help.

Matt 5:13

You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

What does your attitude add to those around you? Does it bring people down or does it lift them up? Is your disposition mostly negative or is it mostly positive? Do you bring joy into the lives of others because you always rejoice in the Lord? Is your attitude one of constantly being critical of what others are doing?

What do your actions show?  Are you one of those people who are always happy and upbeat, or do you just grumble and complain? Do people see in you one who is always looking to lift a burden or to help carry a load, or one who adds more weight to the load? Do you encourage others, or do you bring them down?

Salt adds flavor. Salt preserves foods. Salt gives us the sodium we need to be healthy. Salt is good and good for us (if not abused). Did you ever try to eat green beans or a slice of tomato without salt? Most foods need a little salt added. Most people need someone to be their salt in life. Don’t ever lose your saltiness!

When we get down, and there is no one around to help us get up, we can turn to the Lord, and he will always be with us. We may not see him, but we can almost feel his loving arms wrapped around us. We will not hear his voice out loud, but when we listen to him, by faith we will hear him speaking words of comfort and joy in our hearts. When turmoil rules our minds, he can give us the peace of God and still the storm. Jesus is our salt, and we need to use him freely!

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for those people who are always willing to give of themselves to help others. Thank you for so many who have been by my side when I needed someone so desperately. Even more, thank you for always being with me and helping me when I have faced struggles and trials in my life. Thank you for giving me comfort when I felt it was impossible. Use me today as salt, to flavor, to lift up, to encourage, to help heal wounds, and to preserve others. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
