Daily Devotional: Psalms 29:1-6

Ps 29:1-6

Ascribe to the Lord, O heavenly beings, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness. The voice of the Lord is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the Lord, over many waters. The voice of the Lord is powerful; the voice of the Lord is full of majesty. The voice of the Lord breaks the cedars; the Lord breaks the cedars of Lebanon. He makes Lebanon to skip like a calf, and Sirion like a young wild ox.

Rom 1:18-20

For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.

When I read this Psalm, I am reminded of a tornado that came through a large portion of Alabama back many years ago. It remained on the ground for about a hundred and fifty miles, doing tremendous damage. I drove on a road that followed the devastation, and it looked like an army of bulldozers had come through, leveling everything that was in the path, showing the power of God.

There are few things that can match the power of the wind and water. When these are combined there is almost nothing that can stand in its way. Rivers are caused to change courses. Mountains slide into the valley below. All manmade objects, houses, roads, bridges, buildings, or anything else are swept away as though they were just paper mâché. God is seen in the forces of nature.

But all the forces of nature are but a small thing in the arsenal of God. He spoke and all of nature came into existence. He can flood the earth, or he can cause famine and drought, only with an expression of his will. I have been told that the single greatest factor that drives the financial markets is the weather. This is one thing that mankind cannot control, yet it can change our entire lives in a moment.

O Lord God, all powerful and majestic, it is an awesome thing to realize how your power can be used to show all of us humans just how small we are. Yet, your love for me is overwhelming and beyond my ability to comprehend. I thank you for making it possible for me to be in fellowship with you through Jesus. Thank you for your promise of eternal life in him. Thank you for your marvelous grace. Help me show my thankfulness by sharing your gospel, by helping those in need, and by encouraging those who are struggling. I pray in the name of Jesus.
