Daily Devotional: Proverbs 24:8-12

Prov 24:8-12

8 Whoever plans to do evil will be called a schemer. 9 The devising of folly is sin, and the scoffer is an abomination to mankind. 10 If you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small. 11 Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. 12 If you say, “Behold, we did not know this,” does not he who weighs the heart perceive it? Does not he who keeps watch over your soul know it, and will he not repay man according to his work?

Eph 4:17-19

Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.

Often people claim ignorance as a shield from the consequences of their actions, even though, deep down, they really knew the facts. God knows what we know, and he will hold us accountable for what we do or don’t do. There are a lot of things that we may not know all there is to know about a subject, but we know enough to discern what is right or wrong about it. Ignorance is no excuse.

We are to rescue those who are being taken away to death. We are our brother’s (or sister’s) keeper, even though we may not want to get involved in the affairs of others. When we see them headed for danger, we must at least warn them. This is true when people do not understand the truth from God, and we see them headed in the wrong way. We are to try to show them what God says about it.

One of the problems with this is that far too many people do not think for themselves. They follow the crowd or the leader or just believe it because they saw it on the internet or TV. Unfortunately, most of the information sources exist to spread their agenda or their brand of what they call truth with little regard for actual truth about anything. This is true with politics, with religion, and with a lot of other things that people feel are important to them. Think. Base it on the word of God because this is the only source of all truth for every part of our lives.

O Lord my God, my heavenly Father, I am so thankful that you have revealed to us all that we need for life and for godliness in your word. Give me a greater desire to know your word, wisdom to understand it and how to apply it, and then strength to live it on a daily basis. Above all else, help me have a heart of love for you and for all of those around me, even when I don’t agree with them. Be with our leaders so we can live peaceful and quiet lives. I pray in Jesus’ name.
