Daily Devotional: Proverbs 3:1-4

Prov 3:1-4

My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments, for length of days and years of life and peace they will add to you. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you; bind them around your neck; write them on the tablet of your heart. So, you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man.

Luke 2:50-52

And they did not understand the statement which He had made to them. And He went down with them, and came to Nazareth; and He continued in subjection to them; and His mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus kept increasing in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men.

Jesus listened to his parents and allowed them to teach him. He grew in favor with God and with man. As a parent and a grandparent, I have to admit that there were times that I wondered if all the teaching we tried to do was doing any good at all. It seemed at the time that it was falling on deaf ears. Now, even today when our son and my grandson are grown, we see the fruits of our labor in them. God’s way works. Teach your children to respect God and to follow Jesus in their lives.

Teach your children about steadfast love and faithfulness. Teach them love for their parents, siblings, and then for all other people around them. Teach them to even love their enemies. This is the love of God in us. Steadfast love is strong, even when someone is hard to love. It is a love that is shown and not just spoken.

Faithfulness is dependability. It is trust. It is being that person that is an anchor in life for others to hang on to in their storms. Faithfulness is the inner character of a person that always acts upon the convictions they have deep within their heart. It is not just a single action; it is the outward presentation of the inner person.

But even higher than this, when one has steadfast love and faithfulness toward God, their life will be complete, and their eternal future secured. Jesus said that the summation of the Law was to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. The whole purpose of the human race is to respect God as God and follow his will in our lives because of our love for him, his love for us, and judgment to come.

O Lord God, help me show love in all I do and all I say. Give me a steadfast spirit, so I can be dependable in all things, especially in my love for you. Make me a servant so I will serve you as I use all that I am and all that you have given me to be a blessing to others. Keep me from being greedy, selfish, or self-centered. Be with your people, wherever they are. Guide our leaders so we can live in peace. Bless those who are hurting, those who are sick, and those taking treatments. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
