Daily Devotional: Psalms 139:7-12

Ps 139:7-12

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me," even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.

Acts 5:3-4

Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land? Didn't it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn't the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied to men but to God."

God is God and he is not like man, with all of our limitations. Jonah tried to hide from God, and he ended up in the belly of a custom-made fish. Ananias and his wife, Sapphira, lied to God, thinking he would never know the difference. We can hide from other people, and we can deceive them, but we will never fool God. Do not be deceived, God is never fooled. God is God and he knows all things. (period)

Why would anyone want to hide from God? The story of Jonah gives us the answer to this question. When we want to disobey God, and we don’t want him to know that we are doing this, we may try to hide from him. Adam and Eve tried to hide from God in the Garden, but it didn’t work for them, and it will not work for us today. It may be that we are afraid of what God wants us to do or it may just be rebellion on our part, but whatever the reason, it will never work.

When God asks us to do something, he knows we are capable of doing it. When he tells us to fulfill a mission, he will provide all we need for us to accomplish that mission. Too often we make the mistake of measuring God by ourselves, by our limitations, and by our weaknesses. When he is working for us and his Spirit is working in us, there are no limitations to what can be accomplished. We must trust him and not run away, try to hide or attempt to lie about things.

O Lord my God, I love you for all you are and for all you do. But I know that all the love I have to offer to you and to others is far short of the love you have shown to me in Jesus, your Son. I know that there have been times that I just ignored you and what you want me to do, but I realize that ignoring you is like trying to hide from you and it never works. Give me wisdom, strength, self-control, and a ready willingness to do your will in all things. I pray in the name of Jesus.
