Daily Devotional: Psalms 138:1-5

Ps 138:1-5

I will praise you, O Lord, with all my heart; before the "gods" I will sing your praise. I will bow down toward your holy temple and will praise your name for your love and your faithfulness, for you have exalted above all things your name and your word. When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted. May all the kings of the earth praise you, O Lord, when they hear the words of your mouth. May they sing of the ways of the Lord, for the glory of the Lord is great.

Phil 2:8-11

And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross! Therefore, God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

The Ten Commandments and the Law are based on the holiness of the name of God. Over and over as the Law was being given, we read that God is holy and that he is God. It was in the name of God that Joseph told the meaning of dreams. It was in that same name that Moses parted the Red Sea and that manna fell from heaven. Joshua conquered Canaan in the name of the Lord God. His name is holy.

The name of Jesus is holy today. It is by faith in his name that we can be saved. It is in his name that we give up self, turn from sin and repent so that our sins will be forgiven. We are told to be baptized into the name of Jesus. The apostles healed the sick and drove out demons in the name of Jesus. By faith in God and in Jesus his Son, we are called by a new name, the name of Christian.

Every action on our part either brings honor to the name of Jesus or it dishonors him. As Christians we are to follow Christ. We are to honor Christ. We are to lead others to him so that they can be saved from sin. While some will mock the name of Jesus and will deride those who follow him, it is indeed an honor to belong to him and to be called by his name. Jesus told his disciples that he was persecuted and that they would have to suffer on account of his name. Stand up for Jesus.

O Lord God, holy and reverend is your name in all the earth! Worthy is the Lamb in whose name we find our salvation from sin. Help me live in such a way that will always honor you, the Father and the Son. Forgive me when I fail. I ask you to give your healing to those who live in chronic pain, if healing is not in your will, give them your strength to endure and peace that only comes from you. Guide your people, wherever we are that we can show the love of Jesus and bring others to you. Increase my faith. Give me wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus.
