Daily Devotional: Psalms 109:6-15

Ps 109:6-15

Appoint an evil man to oppose him; let an accuser stand at his right hand. When he is tried, let him be found guilty, and may his prayers condemn him. May his days be few; may another take his place of leadership. May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow. May his children be wandering beggars; may they be driven from their ruined homes. May a creditor seize all he has; may strangers plunder the fruits of his labor. May no one extend kindness to him or take pity on his fatherless children. May his descendants be cut off, their names blotted out from the next generation. May the iniquity of his fathers be remembered before the Lord; may the sin of his mother never be blotted out. May their sins always remain before the Lord, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

Rom 12:19-21

Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. "But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing, you will heap burning coals upon his head." Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good.

Many of the Psalms of David were written during the time that he was fleeing from the king and was living as a fugitive. He had been told by God that he was to be the next king over Israel, but instead he was running for his life, living in caves, and surrounded by a group of men who were outlaws. He had done nothing wrong or illegal. In fact, he had been a leading general in the king’s army and had been very successful. He had done more to strengthen the kingdom than anyone.

In all of this, he always remembered that God was in control and in his time, he would fulfil his promises. When given the opportunity to kill King Saul, on two occasions, he refused to do so or allow his men to kill him. Saul was the Lord’s anointed, and it was up to God to remove him when he was ready. Did David understand why God was allowing this to happen to him? No! But he knew that life was all about bringing glory to God and honoring him as God.

O Lord my God, it is with awe and wonder that I look at your creation and see the magnificent beauty and marvel at your engineering so that all things work together. Thank you for your wisdom and thank you for your love for me. Lord, I want to live up to your glory, to always think, always do, and always say just what you want me to think, do, and say, but too often I know that I fail. Use me to do the job that you have given me to do in life. Give your healing and your peace to those who are taking treatments. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
