Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:23-32

Ps 107:23-32

Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the Lord, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end. Then they cried out to the Lord in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.  They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

Matt 14:29b-31

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, "Lord, save me!" Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. "You of little faith," he said, "why did you doubt?"

Why did you doubt? Why do I doubt? Is it our lack of faith? Is it because we have not seen the goodness of the Lord? Is it because he is not faithful to his promises? Why do we doubt? We probably (well, actually, definitely- not probably) need to take the word of Jesus and say it is our little faith that is the problem.

When Paul wrote to the Romans and described the Gentile world and their lack of faith in God and their ungodly behavior that resulted, he said they were without excuse because they could see his creation all around them, every day. Likewise, we are without excuse when we fail to acknowledge him as God and give him thanks for all he has done for us. He is faithful and will never forsake us.

No organization rises above its leadership, but not all of them will follow their leaders and reach their full potential. Jesus is our King. Jesus is our Great High Priest. Jesus is Lord. When we trust him and his word enough that we follow him, we will reach our potential in him. This is true with the church, it is true with the family, and it is true with each of us as individuals. Do we doubt or do we believe?

O Lord God, give me greater faith! Father God, creator and giver of life, instill me with a greater desire to be like Jesus in all I do and all I say. Help me open my heart to your Spirit and his work so others will see Jesus living in me and glorify your name. Thank you for all the times you have lifted me from the waves and the sea of doubt. Thank you for all you have done in my life and all you have given me over the years. Thank you for my family and friends. I pray in Jesus’ name.
