Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:7-16

Ps 107:7-16

He led them by a straight way to a city where they could settle. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things. Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains, for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High. So, he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. Then they cried to the Lord in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains. Let them give thanks to the Lord for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

John 8:42-45

Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here. I have not come on my own; but he sent me. Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me!

God is love! Our God is a consuming fire! God is patient, not wanting any to perish, but for all to come to repentance. God is just and he will punish those who do not know him and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. He is a God of compassion and mercy, and he put all of the sins of mankind on his Son and then gave him the death penalty that we deserved. In so doing, he became both just and the justifier of those who put their faith in him. In Jesus we can have life!

But since the days of Adam and Eve, people have refused to listen to God and follow his will. Instead, we find ourselves listening to the devil and his lies, which break our fellowship with God. God has warned us and provided more than enough evidence for us to believe, yet too many close their eyes and stop their ears to his call for us to return to him. We need God! We need Jesus!

O Lord God, be merciful to me. I know that too often I am stubborn, or that I just ignore you, or I get selfish and forget about you. When I do these things, I allow things that do not really matter to take your place in my life. I say things or I do things that I wish I could undo, but they are done. Thank you for your mercy and your forgiveness shown to me in Jesus Christ. Increase my faith and help me daily renew my commitment to you. In the name of Jesus, I pray.
