Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:39-43

Ps 106:39-43

They defiled themselves by what they did; by their deeds they prostituted themselves. Therefore, the Lord was angry with his people and abhorred his inheritance. He handed them over to the nations, and their foes ruled over them. Their enemies oppressed them and subjected them to their power. Many times he delivered them, but they were bent on rebellion and they wasted away in their sin.

1 Cor 5:6-8

Your boasting is not good. Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast, as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Therefore, let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth.

It is easy to convince ourselves that we are right and that what we want to do is ok with God. No matter how sincere we are, it is always a danger to allow ourselves to be convinced that our way is the right way. This is seen in the many different things that people (good people, who seem to be seeking to serve the Lord) hold to, believe, and practice. Am I the only one who is right in every matter?

Jesus is truth revealed from God and truth cannot contradict itself. Truth from God is absolute. Truth is always truth; it is not relative to our situation. In his infinite wisdom, God cannot be wrong. He cannot lie. This means that what we have revealed to us in his Word is always truth. Truth always agrees with itself.

The problem is that we don’t always understand it correctly. There are as many different reasons for our misunderstanding as there are people seeking the truth. We must never allow ourselves to think that we have all the right answers about the truth. This is pride and arrogance of the worst kind. The Pharisees, in the days of Jesus thought this way and they condemned everyone who did not agree with them. Using their interpretation of truth, they made their list of things that were important and must be obeyed. Then their lists were elevated above the Word of God. Stand for what we believe. Pray for wisdom, realizing we may be wrong.

O Lord God, give me wisdom to properly understand your truth. Help me always keep an open mind, knowing that I may be wrong in my understanding. As I seek to know your will, help me remember that knowledge can make me proud, so that even if I am right in my interpretation, I can be wrong in my attitude. Use me to teach your word and to share the good news about Jesus as the Savior of the world. Be with those who are hurting, grieving, struggling, and are anxious. Give them peace as they trust you in all things. I pray in the name of Jesus.
