Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:5-11

Ps 105:5-11

Remember the wonders he has done, his miracles, and the judgments he pronounced, O descendants of Abraham his servant, O sons of Jacob, his chosen ones. He is the Lord our God; his judgments are in all the earth. He remembers his covenant forever, the word he commanded, for a thousand generations, the covenant he made with Abraham, the oath he swore to Isaac. He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree, to Israel as an everlasting covenant: "To you I will give the land of Canaan as the portion you will inherit."

Heb 6:17-18

Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.

God’s promises are sure. When he told us to not be deceived because what we do in life will have eternal consequences, this is a promise. The payback for sin is death, and this includes both physical death which comes to all, but it also includes spiritual death, which is the second death. On the other hand, the reward for faithfully living for him is eternal life. We choose for ourselves our destiny.

Perfected love is described by John as when we accept the love of God in Jesus Christ by having our sins washed away. It is further described as being when we continually live for God by obeying his commandments and following his will. John also says that our love is perfected when we love others, even as God has loved us by giving his Son to die for us. He then tells us that perfected love takes away all fear from our lives, because fear has to do with punishment, and we have been cleansed by the blood of Jesus. Our love for God leads us to live for Jesus.

God promised the land of Canaan for the Jews. His promise for us is not that physical land, but it is the land of rest, the new heavens and the new earth, which he will prepare for those who love him. That land “flowed with milk and honey.” The new Canaan is where righteousness lives, with no pain, no sickness, no sorrow, a land of joy and bliss in the presence of God and his Son, Jesus Christ!

O Lord God, what a thrill to know that all you have said to us is for sure, and all your promises are certain. Help me take to heart the responsibility of living for you and being what you want me to become. I need your Spirit to mold me. I need the strength he gives me to live for you. I need the wisdom that you give from above. Give me a pure heart so that every thought is in harmony with your will. Use me to serve those around me, but in such a way that you receive all the recognition and glory. Give peace to your children who are troubled. In Jesus’ name.
