Daily Devotional: Psalms 104:1-9

Ps. 104:1-9

Praise the Lord, my soul. Lord my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. You covered it with the watery depths as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them. You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.

2 Pet. 3:5-7

But they deliberately forget that long ago by God’s word the heavens came into being and the earth was formed out of water and by water. By these waters also the world of that time was deluged and destroyed. By the same word the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

When we consider the majesty of God, we begin to falter in our minds because he is above our ability to comprehend. Paul tells us that everything that has been created has been created by the power of Jesus and all things are sustained by him. We cannot grasp the concept of the triune Godhead, nor can we understand how something can be made from nothing with only a word. When we add to this the infinite wisdom of God in his creation, we are left in awe of his majesty!

What makes this even more amazing is that he knows our name, he knows where we live, he knows when we were born, and yes, he even knows when we will die. In fact, he knows much more about us than we know ourselves. Yet, he loves each of us with a love that is as indescribable as is his wisdom and his power. He cares for you and me! As his children, he uses his mighty power and wisdom to protect us and provide for us. Add to this that Jesus is our brother, our friend, our Savior, our Redeemer, our advocate before the Father, as he intercedes on our behalf.

O Lord God, mighty, awesome and majestic, it is beyond me to grasp your greatness or to understand any part of you. Yet, I know that you love me with a love that is sure. I come to you with assurance because Jesus told me that I can come to you in his name, and you will hear me and answer me. So, in his name I ask you to give me a pure heart and give me wisdom and strength to live for you and to serve you by serving others in his name and to your glory.
