Daily Devotional: Psalms 91:9-16

Ps 91:9-16

If you make the Most High your dwelling — even the Lord, who is my refuge — then no harm will befall you, no disaster will come near your tent. For he will command his angels concerning you to guard you in all your ways; they will lift you up in their hands, so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. You will tread upon the lion and the cobra; you will trample the great lion and the serpent. "Because he loves me," says the Lord, "I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges my name. He will call upon me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble, I will deliver him and honor him. With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation."

1 Thess 5:14-18

And we urge you, brothers, warn those who are idle, encourage the timid, help the weak, be patient with everyone. Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. Be joyful always; pray continually; give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Trust in the Lord for he is good. He promises to be with us in our troubles and to deliver us from them. But this says we will have troubles in life. It is the troubles of life that teach us the most valuable lessons. They strengthen our faith as we learn to lean on the Lord instead of trying to fix everything by ourselves. Troubles teach us patience. They prepare us to help others in their troubles. Thank God for them.

We are here on earth to serve. We cannot serve the Lord if we are unwilling to help others around us. We are not following Christ when we have no compassion, or mercy, or love for others. This is especially true when it is towards those who have less than we have or those who are different from us. When Jesus saw anyone who was lacking physically or spiritually, he had compassion on them. He did not act like he was superior, even though he was God in the flesh.

Too many Christians think that because they belong to a church, they attend the services, they give their money, so they are right with God. The Pharisees did all this, but Jesus said unless our righteousness goes beyond it, we will not enter the kingdom of God. We must first learn to have love, mercy, compassion and justice.

Heavenly Father, what a blessing it is to be your child. Help me have the mind, the heart, and the attitude of Jesus. Use me to help others with what you have given to me. Keep me from ever thinking that I am too good to get on my knees and wash the feet of others, or to touch the leper, or to feed the hungry. Give peace and healing to those who are sick, taking treatments, recovering from surgery, and use me to encourage them. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
