Daily Devotional: Psalms 90:13-17

Ps 90:13-17

Relent, O Lord! How long will it be? Have compassion on your servants. Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. Make us glad for as many days as you have afflicted us, for as many years as we have seen trouble. May your deeds be shown to your servants, your splendor to their children. May the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us — yes, establish the work of our hands.

2 Cor 1:3-5

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. For just as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our lives, so also through Christ our comfort overflows.

We all need the mercy and the grace of God. We are truly helpless in this world because we do not have control of what happens around us. O sure, there are some things we can control, but for the most part that only involves my actions and my attitude, not the rest of what happens. Very often we are the recipient of what others do, which we cannot control. Add to this “time and chance” as well as the general laws of nature which regulate “cause and effect” and we lose control.

So, back where we started, we need the mercy and grace of God in our lives every day, even in a physical way. Even more, even much more, we need the mercy and grace of God in our spiritual lives! Every choice we make in life that does not agree with the will of God is sin, and sin separates us from God. Therefore, we all owe a debt to God that we are unable to repay because we cannot undo our sin.

But God, being rich in mercy because of his great love has saved us by grace, and that through our faith in Jesus as the son of God. There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. The law of sin and death says if we sin, we die. But we are not subject to that law in Christ because the blood of Jesus continues to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. God has re-created us in Christ Jesus so we will engage in good works, so that others will glorify God and come to Jesus.

O Lord God, what a blessing to be in Christ and to know that my sins have all been taken away. Thank you for your love, your mercy, and your grace. Fill me with your Spirit so I will show your love, your mercy, and your grace to others by being kind and forgiving, even as you have forgiven me in your kindness. Give me a pure heart so I will hate sin and live for you in every way. Give me understanding as I study your word so I will know what pleases you and I can make the best use of my time. Be with your people wherever they are. I pray in Jesus’ name.
