Daily Devotional: Psalms 135:1-7

Ps 135:1-7

Praise the LORD. Praise the name of the LORD; praise him, you servants of the LORD, you who minister in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God. Praise the LORD, for the LORD is good; sing praise to his name, for that is pleasant. For the LORD has chosen Jacob to be his own, Israel to be his treasured possession. I know that the LORD is great, that our Lord is greater than all gods. The LORD does whatever pleases him, in the heavens and on the earth, in the seas and all their depths. He makes clouds rise from the ends of the earth; he sends lightning with the rain and brings out the wind from his storehouses.

Rev 1:4-6

John, To the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before his throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood, and has made us to be a kingdom and priests to serve his God and Father-to him be glory and power for ever and ever! Amen.

What is a god? What does that mean in our minds? A god is something that is important to us and something that has first priority in our lives. The world is, and has been filled with many gods, ranging from self to pleasure to money to every kind of fleshly indulgence. But our gods dictate to us how to live, so that we never rise above the gods we serve. So, when we make our own god, we (as mankind or as individuals) will decline morally instead of becoming more loving and pure.

True religion is when we help those in need and keep ourselves free from sin. This is because the only true God is the God of love and therefore, he always cares for us and for our wellbeing. Every law, every rule, and every command he has given to mankind is for our good and to help us enjoy life to a fuller degree. It is this understanding of God that causes us to praise his Holy Name and to give him our allegiance in every part of our lives. He makes eternal life available to all who will confess Jesus Christ as his Son and as Lord, accept him as Savior, and then be buried in baptism, in the likeness of his death, burial and resurrection.

O Lord God, giver of life and all good things, I am so glad that I can know you and live for you in this life. Thank you for revealing yourself to me in your word and then showing your wisdom and your power to me in all of nature around me. I want to be like Jesus in every way but I know I fail too often, so I need your mercy and your forgiveness every day. Use me to help others in their struggles as I show them your love and your compassion. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
