Daily Devotional: Psalms 127:1-5

Ps 127:1-5

Unless the LORD builds the house, its builders labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchmen stand guard in vain. In vain you rise early and stay up late, toiling for food to eat--for he grants sleep to those he loves. Sons are a heritage from the LORD, children a reward from him. Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are sons born in one's youth. Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their enemies in the gate.

2 Peter 1:2-4

Grace and peace be yours in abundance through the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

Jesus said that the wise man built his house on the solid foundation of rock but the foolish man built his on the shifting sands. We all know that the foundation upon which we build determines the sustainability of the house. When we build our lives on the foundation of Jesus and his word, we can know that we will be able to face whatever storms may come into our lives. Jesus is the solid rock.

We will face storms. We will face trials. We will go through times of depression or grief or sorrow or hurt or sickness or pain. Some of us will face these in greater degrees than do others, but we all face problems in life. Some of us by nature are more resilient than others, some endure pain more easily but we all need Jesus to help us through life and to give us the peace and strength to carry on.

We may win a battle on our own, without divine help. But we will not win the war if we do not have the Lord on our side and he is not fighting for us. He can calm the storm but he can also just walk on the water, over the waves. He can heal the sickness or he may just give grace and strength to endure it. Jesus raised the dead while on earth but he also allowed some to reach their goal of eternal life.

O Lord God, giver of life but also the source of eternal life, I give you thanks and ask you to protect me and empower me to live for you in every way. Forgive me when I fail and guide me in your paths as I move on through life. You know what you want me to accomplish in life, so I ask you to give me wisdom to know how and strength to get it done. I ask a special blessing on those who are depressed and especially those who see no purpose in their life. Give them peace. Give them hope. Help them see the purpose in life is to honor you. In Jesus name.
