Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:23-32

Ps 107:23-32

Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end. Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

2 Cor 4:13-14

It is written: "I believed; therefore I have spoken." With that same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence.

We wander off in our own way. We get into trouble and our lives fall apart, and then we turn to God for help. This actually fits most, if not all of us, to some degree and in some way. Even when we are trying to do what is right and we are trying to live as Jesus wants us to live, we still mess up, doing and saying things we wish we had not done. Some are more “serious” than others, but we all fail.

Like the father of the prodigal son, our Father is waiting and looking for us to return, ready to welcome us with open arms. While the Spirit is grieved with our sin and our stubbornness, it does not change the love of God for us or his desire to save us in eternity. But we must come to our senses and come home.

Sometimes the trouble is, that we, like the older brother, feel we are doing it all right and we are not in need of forgiveness. We compare our perception of righteousness in ourselves with that of how we see our brother and we get pretty smug. But the only reason we are right with God is his grace and his forgiveness!

Thank you, O God, for your great love, your tender mercy, your abounding compassion, and your marvelous grace shown to me in Jesus Christ. Thank you, O Lord, for making it possible for me to have my sins forgiven. As your Spirit lives in me, instill in me a greater desire to do your will in all things and to be as much like Jesus as I can possibly be. Help me remember that true success comes only as I serve you in this life and then live with you in eternity. Give your healing to those who are sick and taking treatments, along with your peace. In Jesus name.
