Daily Devotional: Psalms 104:1-9

Ps 104:1-9

Praise the LORD, O my soul. O LORD my God, you are very great; you are clothed with splendor and majesty. He wraps himself in light as with a garment; he stretches out the heavens like a tent and lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind. He makes winds his messengers, flames of fire his servants. He set the earth on its foundations; it can never be moved. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. But at your rebuke the waters fled, at the sound of your thunder they took to flight; they flowed over the mountains, they went down into the valleys, to the place you assigned for them. You set a boundary they cannot cross; never again will they cover the earth.

The Lord God made the earth and all that is in it, on it, and above in the sky. In wisdom, he set all of what we call “nature” in order. The strength of his storms is beyond mankind to control and his lightening can destroy the most sophisticated thing we can devise. While there are changes taking place on earth every day, there is the constant of seasons, times, and years. God set the boundaries of the sea, so the waves only come so far on the shore and then return to their place.

This Almighty God is the God that we serve. His power has no limits, his wisdom knows no boundaries, and nothing escapes his eyes. But he cares for every part of his creation, the creatures in the sea, the animals in the wilderness and the birds in the sky. He feeds them and gives each of them a home that is best suited for their needs. He gives us life in the time and place of his choosing.

He once destroyed the earth with water, in the days of Noah. All of mankind was wicked and refused to acknowledge him as God. The waters fell from the sky and covered the mountains, as one covers himself with a blanket. But when his time was right, he spoke and the waters returned to their place in the sea.

If we believe all this, why do we worry about anything that happens in our lives or in this world? This is the same God who loves us and gave his Son to die for our sin, so we can live with him in eternity. Praise God, we have victory in Jesus!

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love and protection in my life. By your grace, I am what I am today. Give me wisdom to know how to live and how to do your will in all things and toward all people. Give me strength to carry out what you show me to do. Help me never take credit for anything that is accomplished, but to always remember that it is the work of your hand. Give healing to those who are sick, peace to the troubled and joy to the depressed. Be with the leaders of the nations so we can live quiet and peaceable lives. In Jesus name.
