Daily Devotional: Psalms 100:1-5

Ps 100:1-5

1 Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. 2 Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

John 6:27-29

27 Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval." 28 Then they asked him, "What must we do to do the works God requires?" 29 Jesus answered, "The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent."

Everyone in the world worships some god or God. Many claim that they do not even believe in a god, and certainly not in the God of the Bible. Yet in their lives they put their trust in something as being supreme. For many in our culture, it is the god of self. They see themselves as the only god, so their life is all about what they can do for themselves and what brings them pleasure. The problem is that they never find peace of mind or true joy in their hearts.

Others worship the god of greed, of abundance of material possessions, or that of things. John said we are not to love the world or the things of this world because they will all pass away, along with the desire to have them. No matter what we accumulate in this life, we will leave it all behind to someone else. Solomon said that this is a part of the vanity of life, we work for it and leave it to another, who may be a fool and just waste it all. It is like chasing after the wind.

When we put our trust in the only true God, we will never be disappointed. He has given us all we have and he provides us with the intellect and opportunities to earn what we earn. For this reason we come before him with thanksgiving and we praise his blessed name. We work, not to earn our salvation, but we work to bring glory to the Father because he has saved us in Jesus Christ, his Son.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for all you have given to me in a material way, but also, I am thankful for the intellectual abilities and the opportunities you have given me to honor you. Thank you for the spiritual blessings you give me daily in Jesus Christ. Thank you for the many fellow Christians in my life and thank you for the friends who are such a pleasure and encouragement to me. Convict the leaders of our nation that they will want to follow your will and our citizens so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives. I humbly pray in Jesus name.
