Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:1-8

Ps 31:1-8

1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth. 6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols; I trust in the LORD. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. 8 You have not handed me over to the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place.

1 John 5:11-13

11 And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

What a joy to trust in the Lord! What a blessing it is to be his and to know that he is living in us. Whatever we face in life, we know we can depend on him to be with us and to take care of us. He is the one who can defeat all of our enemies, be they physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual, in him we have the victory. The Lord is truth and he is righteous, so in his mercy he will protect us and lead us in his paths. And by following him, we have the promise of that eternal home.

Jesus gives life and he gives it abundantly. It is through Jesus that we have our physical lives. It is by his grace that we enjoy our spiritual lives as well. He has been in our place and he has faced what we face each day. He knows our needs and he understands our stress and our concerns. Jesus has been tempted to do the very things that try to lure us into sin but he has resisted them for us.

Life in Jesus Christ is a life of love. We allow God to empower us with his love and then this same love overflows from our hearts to all those around us. It is by love that we accept the sacrifice of Jesus and put our trust in him. God is love and as we seek to be like him, we exemplify his love in our attitudes and behavior.

O Lord God I am thankful that you are a God of love and that you seek what is best for me in every part of my life. Since I do not see you in person, it is hard at times for me to grasp how you can work in me or how you can change things in my life for my good. But I do trust you. I do live by faith in Jesus Christ and I do know that your Spirit is working in me every day and in so many ways. Use me to help others and to bring glory to you by showing them your love in my life. Be with those who are hurting and give them peace. I pray in Jesus name.
