Daily Devotional: Psalms 18:7-15

Ps 18:7-15

7 The earth trembled and quaked, and the foundations of the mountains shook; they trembled because he was angry. 8 Smoke rose from his nostrils; consuming fire came from his mouth, burning coals blazed out of it. 9 He parted the heavens and came down; dark clouds were under his feet. 10 He mounted the cherubim and flew; he soared on the wings of the wind. 11 He made darkness his covering, his canopy around him--the dark rain clouds of the sky. 12 Out of the brightness of his presence clouds advanced, with hailstones and bolts of lightning. 13 The LORD thundered from heaven; the voice of the Most High resounded. 14 He shot his arrows and scattered the enemies, great bolts of lightning and routed them. 15 The valleys of the sea were exposed and the foundations of the earth laid bare at your rebuke, O LORD, at the blast of breath from your nostrils.

Rom 1:20

20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.

I watched as a robotic machine put parts together. It took several parts and assembled them in the proper order and then attached them with rivets or at times welded them. It then etched the part number with a laser beam. This was amazing to me but I never attributed the work being done to the machine. With each piece that came off of the machine came a testimony of the person(s) who designed and built this piece of equipment. But it did not happen by accident.

We can be like the Psalmist who saw God in everything around him. God was in the clouds and in the storms. When it thundered, it was God speaking and when the lightening flashed, it was sent from heaven. Everything we call “nature” is the work of God and we do well to recognize it as such. He designed and made it all.

The other choice is to be like the Gentiles described by Paul, who did not see God in anything or anywhere. Their foolish hearts were darkened so they worshipped the creation instead of the creator. They are without excuse before God.

Heavenly Father I am so amazed at your creation. In it I see your wisdom and your power. As I stand at the beach and see the huge waves come rolling in, I see your control as they stop within a few feet each time. While people on earth seek to make electricity, you send a bolt of lightning that is so powerful it is beyond my ability to grasp. Help me see you in the flowers of spring and the birds as they sing or fly by. You love is seen in the rain and in the warmth of the sun which together, make the crops grow in their season. I praise you in Jesus name.
