Daily Devotional: Psalms 16:1-11

Ps 16:1-11

1 Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." 3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips. 5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy one see decay. 11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

Having been blessed with the opportunity to attend school, all the way through part of my college years, at schools that were run by Christians and where most of the students were also, I know what it is like to be around a lot of fellow believers and the influence for good this can be. I have also attended Christian camps, adult retreats, Bible lectures and some huge singings. It is a real privilege to be around so many Christians and to enjoy the fellowship of kindred spirits. It makes doing what is right so much easier than it is in other settings.

I have also worked in insurance and industrial sales. I have been a car salesman and even in management in a dealership before working in several factories in various manufacturing facilities. This is what some call the “real world” and it is not always as easy to do what is right in these places as it is in a place where one is surrounded by others who are seeking to please the Lord.

Paul said we have to live in the world but we are not to be of the world. Jesus was on this earth and he associated with sinners and attended social functions. To let our lights shine, we must not keep them under a basket. But wherever God has placed us, we are to let our lights shine so others will see Christ living in us.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful that by your grace you placed me in the time and the family where I was born. Thank you for the many opportunities you have given me to learn your will and to be influenced by so many godly people. Thank you for allowing me to see a foretaste of heaven while singing praises to you and while being around so many others who love you. I also thank you for the thorns in my rose garden of life and for the lessons these have taught me. Use me to help others serve you and live for you. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
