Daily Devotional: Psalms 124:1-8

Ps 124:1-8

1 If the LORD had not been on our side--let Israel say--2 if the LORD had not been on our side when men attacked us, 3 when their anger flared against us, they would have swallowed us alive; 4 the flood would have engulfed us, the torrent would have swept over us, 5 the raging waters would have swept us away. 6 Praise be to the LORD, who has not let us be torn by their teeth. 7 We have escaped like a bird out of the fowler's snare; the snare has been broken, and we have escaped. 8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Rom 8:31-32

31 What, then, shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, who can be against us? 32 He who did not spare his own Son, but gave him up for us all-how will he not also, along with him, graciously give us all things?

A really sad statement in scripture is when Delilah cut Samson’s hair and then told him the Philistines were upon him. It says he awoke and got up to fight them, not knowing that the Lord had departed from him. God had told him that as long as he did not cut his hair, he would be with him and deliver him. He had revealed his secret to Delilah and she had betrayed him. Now, God was not on his side.

God does not change in character or his position. What was right a thousand years ago is right today and what was wrong is still wrong. Morality is based on the very nature of God and not on some whim so it is constant. No matter what society says or what lawmakers make legal, immorality is still immoral. Murder is murder even when called by names such as abortion or euthanasia. It is still an abomination to God for anyone to participate in homosexuality. Sin is sin.

God is love and he wants everyone to be saved, to have eternal life with him in heaven. But for God to be just, sin must be punished. So by the grace of God and because of his mercy, he gave his Son to die on the cross for our sin so that we can live in him. But while this forgiveness is available to everyone, not everyone is forgiven. It must be accepted by faith; a faith that submits to the will of God in humble obedience when we confess Jesus and are baptized into him.

Heavenly Father it is such a joy knowing that you are with me. Help me keep my life aligned with you and your will. I constantly need your wisdom to know what is best and your strength to carry it out in my life. Fill me with your Spirit so I will have your love in my heart. Be with those who are taking treatments for various diseases that they can be healed. Protect those who are suffering from famine, from floods and from other disasters. Help me know what to do to help. Use me in your service to teach and encourage others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
