Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:1-8

Ps 119:1-8 Aleph (First letter of the Hebrew alphabet rf)

1 Blessed are they whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the LORD. 2 Blessed are they who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart. 3 They do nothing wrong; they walk in his ways. 4 You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. 5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! 6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. 7 I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. 8 I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me.

2 Tim 3:16-17

16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

God is so good and he is love. His love endures forever! He has given his Son to die for our sin and he has revealed this good news in the gospel. He has revealed his will in the Word and tells us how to live. Every part of our lives are guided by our relationship to him and by the scripture. While much is given in principles and not in direct commands, we have all we need to know how to please God.

There is meaning and there is purpose to our lives. The world is filled with people who do not know this purpose and who drift about with no hope because they are without God. Many of these have been misled with ideas of Satan that tell us there is no absolute truth and all morality is relative to the situation. In effect, this makes us our own gods and we decide all that is right or wrong. Add to this the greed that prevails and the immorality that is so prevalent and it is no wonder the world is in the condition we see around us. “Life is about me – I am entitled.”

What God has revealed to us is that true joy and real happiness come when we learn to serve others. God so loved the world that he gave to us. Jesus humbled himself for us when he gave up heaven to come to earth to die for us. He told his disciples that he came to serve and that we are to follow his example in service to others. Living for God in Jesus Christ gives us purpose, meaning and hope in this world. “By this all men will know my disciples because they love one another.”

O Lord God it is with joy that I thank you for revealing your will for me in a way that is understandable and can be followed. As the Psalmist said, I know I fail at times and I need your mercy and forgiveness but I want to know and do your will in all things. I need a new infusion of your wisdom and an infusion of your strength each day as I am being molded by your Spirit. Thank you for loving me. Open my heart to help others, physically, emotionally and most of all in a spiritual way. Keep me from being selfish. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
