Daily Devotional: Psalms 114:1-8

Ps 114:1-8

1 When Israel came out of Egypt, the house of Jacob from a people of foreign tongue, 2 Judah became God's sanctuary, Israel his dominion. 3 The sea looked and fled, the Jordan turned back; 4 the mountains skipped like rams, the hills like lambs. 5 Why was it, O sea, that you fled, O Jordan, that you turned back, 6 you mountains, that you skipped like rams, you hills, like lambs? 7 Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob, 8 who turned the rock into a pool, the hard rock into springs of water.

Acts 7:35-36

35 "This is the same Moses whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who made you ruler and judge?' He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt and did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert.

Imagine being really thirsty and there is no water to drink and then God opens a rock and water flows out! We are not talking about a few drops of water but we are talking about a river flowing out of a dry rock. This was enough water to quench the thirst of over a million people, plus all of their animals. This is the same God who split the waters of the Red Sea and allowed them to escape the army of Egypt on dry ground and then brought the water back down to destroy the enemy. Surely, they would never forget this or the God who did it.

But they did forget and they turned away to worship a calf made of gold that they had helped to form from their jewelry. They proclaimed this calf as the god who brought them out of bondage in Egypt. They gave this image the glory that only the God of heaven deserved. It is no wonder he wanted to destroy them all.

This is the same God who made all we see around us today. He is the same God who allowed us to be born and live in a time and country where we can enjoy freedoms that are unprecedented in world history. He is the God who has allowed us to find the technology that was science fiction only a few years ago. But do we forget? Do we honor him as God? Do we give thanks to him or live for ourselves?

Heavenly Father it is so wonderful to live in the age where you have put me and to enjoy things that my forefathers never dreamed were possible. The internet is such an example that allows us to spread your word and praise your name over the entire world and you make it possible. Help me never forget that the greatest discoveries of mankind are just a drop of your creation that they have figured out how to use. Be with our nation. Guide our leaders and give them your wisdom so we can live quiet and peaceful lives. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
