Daily Devotional: Psalms 112:6-10

Ps 112:6-10

6 Surely, he will never be shaken; a righteous man will be remembered forever. 7 He will have no fear of bad news; his heart is steadfast, trusting in the LORD. 8 His heart is secure; he will have no fear; in the end he will look in triumph on his foes. 9 He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor, his righteousness endures forever; his horn will be lifted high in honor. 10 The wicked man will see and be vexed; he will gnash his teeth and waste away; the longings of the wicked will come to nothing.

Matt 6:31-34

31 So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

While not always a fan of the NIV translation, I really do like the way verse 34 is worded. “Do not worry about tomorrow because each day has enough trouble of its own.” This expresses a truth that we all know but too often fail to recognize. If we worry about tomorrow, we are wasting our time (besides doubting the word of God). We are taking away from our joy today by what may or may not happen at some later time. If, and when it does happen, God will deal with it then.

There have been so many times in my life that the troubles I faced in the present were just getting me ready or getting circumstances ready for what was to come in the future. Of course, at the time I had no way of knowing this but later could look back and see how God worked it all out for me. God always knows best.

Think about the life of David or the life of Moses and see how God got things ready for them to lead God’s people. They both went through a lot of hard times in preparation but God used them for his purpose. So we need to let God work on us and get us ready and then we need to be available to be used when the time does come. We must never turn down an opportunity to do good.

Heavenly Father open my eyes to the opportunities you present and give me a willing heart to be used in your service. Thank you for taking care of me and my family over the years and also for whatever days may be ahead. Give me wisdom to know and strength to do your will. Forgive me when I fail and do or say things that should not be done or said. Increase my faith so I will not worry, no matter what happens but will instead turn it over to you and let it go. Extend your grace to our nation so we can live in peace. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
