Daily Devotional: Psalms 109:16-20

Ps 109:16-20

16 For he never thought of doing a kindness but hounded to death the poor and the needy and the brokenhearted. 17 He loved to pronounce a curse--may it come on him; he found no pleasure in blessing--may it be far from him. 18 He wore cursing as his garment; it entered into his body like water, into his bones like oil. 19 May it be like a cloak wrapped about him, like a belt tied forever around him. 20 May this be the LORD's payment to my accusers, to those who speak evil of me.

Acts 13:21-23

22 After removing Saul, he made David their king. He testified concerning him: 'I have found David son of Jesse a man after my own heart; he will do everything I want him to do.' 23 "From this man's descendants God has brought to Israel the Savior Jesus, as he promised.

It is difficult for us to put ourselves in the place of King David. He was chosen by God to lead his people because his heart was set on being like him. God then promised to be with him and this included blessing him as King and defeating his enemies. Those who opposed David were opposing God. Those who sought to harm him were in fact, fighting against God who put him in power.

David was not perfect and he sinned in some ways we consider as big and as horrible. He even forgot who made him king and let his pride get the best of him when he counted the people so he could boast. God did not ignore his sin, as he was punished for each of them but in the end, God forgave him. Since his heart was right and his desire was to please God, he turned from sin and confessed it.

We can certainly work on our hearts as we yield them to the Holy Spirit of God to mold us and make us more like him. We can remember that we are what we are by the grace of God and allow him to use us in his service. A noble servant in the service of God is honored by him as much as was David the king. Serving as God’s “water boy” in the name of Jesus is a task that is never overlooked or forgotten by the Father. He will protect us and be with us, no matter what we face in life or who may be against us. “If (since) God is for us, who can be against us?”

Heavenly Father it is such a joy to be able to know that you care about me and that you are actually in control of all things. What a blessing to be able to go to bed at night and know that all of my sins are forgiven and with each new day I am given a new chance at life and living for you. Help me keep my eyes focused on you and not be distracted by all the turmoil in this world. Guide me in all I do to put you first in my life. Increase my faith so that when I do not understand why, I will trust you and your will and do it. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus.
