Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:23-32

Ps 107:23-32

23 Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters. 24 They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep. 25 For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves. 26 They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away. 27 They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits' end. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men. 32 Let them exalt him in the assembly of the people and praise him in the council of the elders.

Mark 4:37-41

37 A furious squall came up, and the waves broke over the boat, so that it was nearly swamped. 38 Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" 39 He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. 40 He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" 41 They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"

There is nothing that makes us feel more helpless than when we are at sea and a storm arises. From personal experience, twenty- and thirty-foot waves can make even a large ship reel and toss and make the passengers feel sick. The power in the ocean waves is almost beyond imagination and can unleash destruction in a way that is almost unexplainable. Hurricanes are only one example of this.

But no matter what kind of storm may arise, in the ocean or a proverbial storm in our lives, the one who made the ocean and the one who made us is in control. He can speak the word and all is calm! Do we still have no faith? Whether it is a virus or social unrest or political or if it is personal illness, death in our family, divorce, money problems or anything else, we are not to worry but pray and trust God.

Heavenly Father it is with joy that I come to you in the midst of all the problems that face us in this world and in our nation with the assurance that you are in control and can solve them all. Give me faith to be at peace and to be calm by trusting you in it all. Help me begin with myself and get rid of all bitterness and hatred from my heart. Fill me with compassion instead of judgment. Fill my heart to overflowing with your love so I will extend grace and forgiveness to others. Be with our nation in our elections. Your will be done. I pray in Jesus name.
