Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:1-8

Ps 89:1-8

1 I will sing of the LORD's great love forever; with my mouth I will make your faithfulness known through all generations. 2 I will declare that your love stands firm forever, that you established your faithfulness in heaven itself. 3 You said, "I have made a covenant with my chosen one, I have sworn to David my servant, 4'I will establish your line forever and make your throne firm through all generations.'" Selah 5 The heavens praise your wonders, O LORD, your faithfulness too, in the assembly of the holy ones. 6 For who in the skies above can compare with the LORD? Who is like the LORD among the heavenly beings? 7 In the council of the holy ones God is greatly feared; he is more awesome than all who surround him. 8 O LORD God Almighty, who is like you? You are mighty, O LORD, and your faithfulness surrounds you.

Heb 13:15-16

15 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God a sacrifice of praise-the fruit of lips that confess his name. 16 And do not forget to do good and to share with others, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

How can we as mortal beings fathom the greatness of God? How can we grasp the meaning of infinity and of eternity? Can we conceptualize the ability to speak a single word and that which does not exist comes into being? In our weakness we fail to do that which we know is good and we do or say things that we wish we had never done. But we serve a God who is absolutely moral and pure, one who is holy in every thought and who personifies love and mercy and faithfulness.

As we learn his character, we will seek to imitate him and we will praise him with all our being. We offer the praise of our lips but also, we praise him in our actions and by showing his love in our lives. We help those in need and we show mercy and compassion to those who are in distress. God is seen in and through us.

In his greatness and his goodness he provides a way for us to be rid of our sin and to be able to live with him in eternity. But in his dwelling place there is no sin, no death, no crying, no sickness and even no hurt feelings. Life is short, even if we live a hundred years. But because Christ died for us, we can live with him forever.

Heavenly Father it is so wonderful to focus on you and on your greatness. It fills my heart with awe when I consider your holiness and your purity. Your love is beyond my ability to comprehend. I praise you with all my being and simply ask you to help me be like you and like Jesus in my life. I know that I do not always understand your plan or what is happening in my life and in the world around me but give me greater faith so I will always trust you. Be merciful to our nation and to our leaders and give them wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
