Daily Devotional: Psalms 59:9-17

Ps 59:9-17

9 O my Strength, I watch for you; you, O God, are my fortress, 10 my loving God. God will go before me and will let me gloat over those who slander me. 11 But do not kill them, O Lord our shield, or my people will forget. In your might make them wander about and bring them down. 12 For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, 13 consume them in wrath, consume them till they are no more. Then it will be known to the ends of the earth that God rules over Jacob. Selah 14 They return at evening, snarling like dogs, and prowl about the city. 15 They wander about for food and howl if not satisfied. 16 But I will sing of your strength, in the morning I will sing of your love; for you are my fortress, my refuge in times of trouble. 17 O my Strength, I sing praise to you; you, O God, are my fortress, my loving God.

Eph 6:15-18

16 In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.

When we give our life to Christ it does not take away all of our problems and it does not keep us from being tempted to sin. Life is still life and the fact is that there is a reality of “time and chance” that overtakes us all. But there is also the truth that Satan will do all he can to make us deny our Lord or make us doubt him so that we will wither and die in our lack of faith. We must trust our God.

The shield of faith is based on the sword of the Spirit. It is demonstrated as we turn to God in prayer and allow him to strengthen us and give us peace. One of the most powerful things we have in life is prayer. One of the most consoling things God has provided is prayer. We must be alert with a prayer for ourselves and for fellow saints on all occasions and for all things. Praise the Lord!

Heavenly Father give me strength when I am faced with temptation or begin to doubt you. Help me use everything that happens to me to increase my faith and to draw me closer to you. Fill my heart with your assurance so I will have peace in my heart, even in the worst of times. Help me rejoice always and to sing praises to you. Thank you for the opportunity to come to you in prayer and help me use it as my first line of defense and not as a last resort. Take my eyes off of this world and the things around me and help me focus on Jesus and my new home above where he is seated at your right hand. I humbly pray in is Holy name.
