Daily Devotional: Psalms 58:1-5

Ps 58:1-5

1 Do you rulers indeed speak justly? Do you judge uprightly among men? 2 No, in your heart you devise injustice, and your hands mete out violence on the earth. 3 Even from birth the wicked go astray; from the womb they are wayward and speak lies. 4 Their venom is like the venom of a snake, like that of a cobra that has stopped its ears, 5 that will not heed the tune of the charmer, however skillful the enchanter may be.

1 Thess 2:10-14

10 You are witnesses, and so is God, of how holy, righteous and blameless we were among you who believed. 11 For you know that we dealt with each of you as a father deals with his own children, 12 encouraging, comforting and urging you to live lives worthy of God, who calls you into his kingdom and glory. 13 And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

suppose that since the first governments there has been corruption among the officials. This has led some to conclude that Satan is the origin of all earthly governments and that they are inherently evil. However, both Peter and Paul tell us that it is God who established and controls all governments. It is the lust of greed and the pursuit of power that contribute to the corruption.

Also, no person is above the law, since it is ordained by God. But people with a little power or what they see as great wealth often feel they can do as they please and not have to answer for it. This is true in every organization; civil, religious or even social clubs. Thus we see the misuse of power or influence abound.

But a bad politician does not mean all officials are evil. A corrupt preacher or elder does not mean all religious leaders are wicked. A policeman who abuses his/her position does not mean all law enforcement is abusive. It means that we are all human and we all give in to temptations at times in various ways. But God is in control and he will be the judge. Even those who are powerful enough to get away with it during their lifetime will stand before him to give an account.

Heavenly Father please be with those who are in positions of authority. Give them a servant heart and an honest heart to do your will. I ask your wisdom for the leaders of our nation and those of other countries as well so that we can live in a peaceful world and be free to serve you as you dictate. Give wisdom to the judges who preside over the courts of our land. Guide the press so they will report truth with no hidden agenda but to inform the public. Be with your church that we may show forth your glory and honor your name. I pray in the name of Jesus.
