Daily Devotional: Psalms 46:1-6

Ps 46:1-6

1 God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. 2 Therefore we will not fear, though the earth give way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea, 3 though its waters roar and foam and the mountains quake with their surging. Selah 4 There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. 5 God is within her, she will not fall; God will help her at break of day. 6 Nations are in uproar, kingdoms fall; he lifts his voice, the earth melts.

Rom 13:1-3

1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, he who rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and he will commend you.

God is in control. That means there is no reason to fret about what is happening but rather we are to trust him. That does not mean that we don’t have some bad rulers or government officials. Some are selfish and are driven only by what they think will satisfy them or their personal agenda. It may be that some officials do indeed want to destroy our nation but it can only happen when God is ready for it to be destroyed. God can use bad people to carry out his choices and his plans.

Having said all of this, we are told to pray for our leaders that we may live in peace and that the word of God may be spread. The solution to our national problems will not be found in politics but when we live for the Lord and teach others to do the same. As in the days of the New Testament, we can turn the world upside down with the gospel of Jesus Christ and impact the whole world.

This begins with you and me living for Christ and allowing him to live in us. It begins with us teaching our family, our neighbors and those around us. But there is nothing more effective in evangelism than our godly example.

Heavenly Father there is so much evil in our land and even in our government but I do trust you and know you are in control. I ask you to stir the hearts of people in this nation to know you are God and that Jesus is your Son and that only in him can true peace be found. Give our leaders wisdom to rule in such a way that we can live a peaceable and godly life. But even more, be with your people that we may know how to get along and work together in your service. Help us reach out to those who are lost with your gospel. I pray in the name of Jesus.
