Daily Devotional: Psalms 38:9-16

Ps 38:9-16

9 All my longings lie open before you, O Lord; my sighing is not hidden from you. 10 My heart pounds, my strength fails me; even the light has gone from my eyes. 11 My friends and companions avoid me because of my wounds; my neighbors stay far away. 12 Those who seek my life set their traps, those who would harm me talk of my ruin; all day long they plot deception. 13 I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear, like a mute, who cannot open his mouth; 14 I have become like a man who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply. 15 I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. 16 For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips."

Eph 4:30-32

30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 32 Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.

God’s love is great, his mercy is rich so he can show the incomparable riches of his grace to us. We did not invent love. Love is from God because he is love. But his love can be perfected in us so that we trust him in all things with no reservations and therefore no worry or fear. As we allow his Spirit to work in us, we begin to bear the fruit of love in our lives which produces mercy and forgiveness in us.

As we turn to God in all things and follow him, we become his servant and slaves to righteousness. But it is in this devotion we find true and lasting freedom. We are free from the shackles of sin that only bring more sin and more problems into our lives. We are free from the guilt of sin so we can sleep at night with a clear conscience. Even as Jesus chose to serve God, we are free to make it our ambition to do his will in all things and allow Christ to be our Lord, our ruler and our king.

So no matter what we face in life, Jesus can and will lift our load when we turn to him in faith, which yields submissive obedience. Others may turn against us and even malign us but when God is for us, what does it matter who is against us? As his children we are more than conquerors in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Heavenly Father, ageless, eternal and all wise, I come to you today in humility as I compare my frailties with your infinite and immutable righteousness. Yet, as your child in Jesus Christ, I come to you in boldness and with assurance that you will hear me and answer me. Thank you for your grace. I need you every hour of every day to mold me and change me into your image. Help me keep my eyes on Jesus and on the goal of heaven. Lord, I am distressed by the hatred and fighting in our nation and ask your intervention for peace. I pray in the name of Jesus.
