Daily Devotional: Psalms 37:34-40

Ps 37:34-40

34 Wait for the LORD and keep his way. He will exalt you to inherit the land; when the wicked are cut off, you will see it. 35 I have seen a wicked and ruthless man flourishing like a green tree in its native soil, 36 but he soon passed away and was no more; though I looked for him, he could not be found. 37 Consider the blameless, observe the upright; there is a future for the man of peace. 38 But all sinners will be destroyed; the future of the wicked will be cut off. 39 The salvation of the righteous comes from the LORD; he is their stronghold in time of trouble. 40 The LORD helps them and delivers them; he delivers them from the wicked and saves them, because they take refuge in him.

Rom 15:13

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

What a blessing to be a child of God and to know that he is with us, knows all we face in life and will protect us and provide for us. The Christian lives a life of hope and assurance that the world does not and cannot know. We have been promised all of this, plus we have the assurance that we will be with the Lord in eternity in a place of rest and peace. There will be no sickness, no pain, no sorrow or death.

We have been given the Holy Spirit to live in us as a pledge (guarantee) that God will keep his promise to us. We are also empowered by the Holy Spirit to handle whatever we face and to overcome every temptation that comes to us. He fills our hearts with love, with joy and with peace. He gives us understanding of God’s word as we study and learn it and then he also gives us wisdom to apply it.

As we begin a new year with no knowledge of what it will bring or what may actually happen to us and our loved ones, we face it with joy, assurance and hope as we put our trust in God and in Jesus Christ. He knows what is best for us and what we need to be faithful to him in all things. This new year is another new beginning for each of us and a time we can make a new commitment to faithfully serve the Lord in every way. God has done and will continue to do his part for us to have a blessed and happy life. Now, we must embrace his love in our hearts.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and for the many blessings showered on me this past year. Thank you for the hope you have given me in Jesus Christ and in the power of your Holy Spirit. Empower me to be a better person in all I do and say this year. Use me to reach out to others with your gospel and to provide a better understanding of your word in my teaching. Use this devotional to help someone each day so that your name will be glorified. Be with our nation and our leaders; bless them with your wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus, my Lord.
