Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:19-24

Ps 31:19-24

19 How great is your goodness, which you have stored up for those who fear you, which you bestow in the sight of men on those who take refuge in you. 20 In the shelter of your presence you hide them from the intrigues of men; in your dwelling you keep them safe from accusing tongues. 21 Praise be to the LORD, for he showed his wonderful love to me when I was in a besieged city. 22 In my alarm I said, "I am cut off from your sight!" Yet you heard my cry for mercy when I called to you for help. 23 Love the LORD, all his saints! The LORD preserves the faithful, but the proud he pays back in full. 24 Be strong and take heart, all you who hope in the LORD.

John 12:44-46

44 Then Jesus cried out, "When a man believes in me, he does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. 45 When he looks at me, he sees the one who sent me. 46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.

Peter says that we have been called out of darkness into the marvelous light of Jesus Christ. As children of light we are to seek to please the Lord by living for him and following his word. This begins when we develop an attitude like Jesus, an attitude of love, kindness, meekness and compassion. As we demonstrate Christ living in us, we shine forth the light of Jesus and his gospel.

Over the years I have heard and read of many different evangelism tools, ways we can reach out to the lost with the gospel. Many of these are effective when put into practice but there is no better way to reach the lost than to show them the light of Jesus shining in us. When we “rejoice in the Lord always” and we exude love and kindness in our speech and actions, living a life free of worry and anxiety, it is like a magnet that will draw people to Christ. They will want what we have.

This kind of an attitude will make us the best spouse we can possibly be because we are seeking the good of others. It will make us the best parents because we will instill a love for God and his word. In every relationship we will bring peace and joy instead of turmoil and strife. God will be glorified by our lives.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love for me. As I see the example of Jesus and his perfect attitude toward self and others, I see all the flaws in my life and in my attitude. I know (and realize more each day) that I don’t deserve to be your son, not even your servant. Thank you for your compassion and your grace that enables me to belong to you and be in your family. Help me live in a way that shows Jesus living in me and brings glory to you. Continue to forgive me when I fail and I sin. Use me to lead others to you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
