Daily Devotional: Psalms 31:1-8

Ps 31:1-8

1 In you, O LORD, I have taken refuge; let me never be put to shame; deliver me in your righteousness. 2 Turn your ear to me, come quickly to my rescue; be my rock of refuge, a strong fortress to save me. 3 Since you are my rock and my fortress, for the sake of your name lead and guide me. 4 Free me from the trap that is set for me, for you are my refuge. 5 Into your hands I commit my spirit; redeem me, O LORD, the God of truth. 6 I hate those who cling to worthless idols; I trust in the LORD. 7 I will be glad and rejoice in your love, for you saw my affliction and knew the anguish of my soul. 8 You have not handed me over to the enemy but have set my feet in a spacious place.

Eph 2:8-10

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. 10 For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.

Jesus said we are to let our light shine so that others will see our good works and glorify the Father who is in heaven. We are to do all things in the name of the Lord. On another occasion, Jesus said when we give a cup of cold water in his name, our Father will take notice and we will not lose our reward. He was saying that when we do what we do in the name of Jesus we bring him honor.

When we put our trust in God and our eternal destiny in Jesus we will never be put to shame. There will indeed be those who will mock us or make fun of us but that will not shame us because we are not trusting in what they say and how they feel about us. We are trusting in our Jesus who is not ashamed to be called our brother. Peter said we are never to be ashamed of the name Christian because it is not a religious title but a designation of allegiance to Christ in all things.

No matter what I face in life and no matter what the circumstances are around me, I can trust God to take care of me and to be with me. I know that Jesus is my friend and will walk with me. The Spirit lives in me and gives me his wisdom and strength to be able to overcome every temptation and to be faithful to God.

Heavenly Father I come to you in the name of and for the sake of Jesus my Savior and my Lord. Thank you for making it possible for me to wear the name of Christ as a Christian. Keep me from ever being ashamed of that name but to be willing to live a life of good deeds, done in his name and to your glory. Forgive me when I sin and fail to live up to your glory. Keep me from ever thinking that what you have given me is mine but give me a willing heart to use all I am and all I have to help others and lead them to you. Give me wisdom and increase my faith.
