Daily Devotional: Psalms 30:1-6

Ps 30:1-6

1 I will exalt you, O LORD, for you lifted me out of the depths and did not let my enemies gloat over me. 2 O LORD my God, I called to you for help and you healed me. 3 O LORD, you brought me up from the grave; you spared me from going down into the pit. 4 Sing to the LORD, you saints of his; praise his holy name. 5 For his anger lasts only a moment, but his favor lasts a lifetime; weeping may remain for a night but rejoicing comes in the morning. 6 When I felt secure, I said, "I will never be shaken."

1 Thess 5:15-18

15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always try to be kind to each other and to everyone else. 16 Be joyful always; 17 pray continually; 18 give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

Do you have some days when you feel secure? Maybe it seems that everything has finally fallen into place and life is good. We all have these good days and then comes that rule that predicts “if anything can go wrong it will.” All of a sudden what was a wonderful day is filled with tragedy or a big pile of minor irritations that all add up to a bad day. Our best friend betrays us or we get that pink slip or the doctor tells us news we hoped to never hear. Life has ups and downs.

As the children of God we can feel secure every day. No matter what happens or what anyone does, we can put our trust in God and know he will take care of us, provide for us and deliver us. We must not confuse his promises and think he has said he will take away all of our problems. He has not said this. But he will see us through them and gives us wisdom to know where and how to go, along with the strength to carry on. He will work all things for our good if we love him.

Much like when Peter was walking on the water to meet Jesus, saw the waves and began to sink, in our lives we look at the storms instead of keeping focused on our Lord. But also like that incident, when this happens and we are drowning in the sea of life, Jesus is always nearby with outstretched hand to pull us up and save us. Trust in the Lord, live for him, and we will be secure and never be shaken.

O Lord God, creator and giver of life, eternal majestic and glorious, I come to you this morning with all of my cares and my worries. Life is filled with problems and mine are probably no worse than what others have but they are mine and I need your help every day. Thank you for your love and your grace. I see you in your glory and I see myself in my weakness and failures and wonder how you could love me or even hear me when I call to you. Yet, I know in Christ I can come to you with confidence and know you hear me and will answer me. Increase my faith and give me wisdom to be what you want me to become. I pray in Jesus name.
