Daily Devotional: Psalms 1:1-6

Ps 1:1-6

1 Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. 2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on his law he meditates day and night. 3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers. 4 Not so the wicked! They are like chaff that the wind blows away. 5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment, nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous. 6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous, but the way of the wicked will perish.

Matt 5:14-16

14 "You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom. This knowledge is not just general knowledge or a good secular education. True knowledge is about God and what is right. There is a wisdom from this world that has its origin from Satan and leads to strife, trouble and death but the wisdom from above is pure, peaceable and full of good fruits. This wisdom uses the knowledge of God and his law to guide us. A really good life begins when we respect God and his word.

The one who lives for God must be careful who he chooses for his closest friends and companions. We must associate with people of this world, or else we would have to leave the world but we do not have to let the world become a part of us and we a part of it. We are not to be conformed to the world and the evil that is so prevalent. We are told to not love the world and the things of this world.

As the children of God we love to feast on his word and let his law fill our minds and hearts. It is only through his written revelation that we can truly come to know God. As we study the Bible, we learn of God’s love for us and his plan from before time to provide a way for us to have eternal life. The whole purpose of our existence is to respect God, to love him and keep his will for our lives.

O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. Your glory reaches above the heavens and is seen in the ocean depths. Every bird that sings and each flower that blooms shows your majesty and wisdom. Help me recognize better each day your greatness and your power but also your love and compassion. Keep me in your care as I seek to put you first in all of my life. I ask your special care on those who are serving you in the face of daily persecutions, even the threat of death, that they will have strength to be faithful. I pray in Jesus name.
