Daily Devotional: Psalms 128:1-6

Ps 128:1-6

1 Blessed are all who fear the LORD, who walk in his ways. 2 You will eat the fruit of your labor; blessings and prosperity will be yours. 3 Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your sons will be like olive shoots around your table. 4 Thus is the man blessed who fears the LORD. 5 May the LORD bless you from Zion all the days of your life; may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem, 6 and may you live to see your children's children. Peace be upon Israel.

Gal 3:6-9

6 Consider Abraham: "He believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness." 7 Understand, then, that those who believe are children of Abraham. 8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you." 9 So those who have faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

Just as the nation of Israel was special to God in the Old Testament, by faith we are his special people today. God loves his own and he protects and defends us against Satan, his and our enemy. In Christ we are given all spiritual blessings and many physical promises as well. God wants what is best for us in every way. When we follow his will, we find true joy, peace and happiness.

As parents we are (or have been) in a position where we know what is best for our children and tried to convince them to follow that way and to enjoy the benefits of doing so. However, all too often, we have to watch as they make a mistake (or simply refuse to do as told) and suffer the consequences. We may plead with them and try to explain but all too often, to no avail.

Imagine how God must feel as we go our own way and not listen to his word. He has revealed to us how to live and how to have the best life possible but we make mistakes (or simply refuse to do as told) and we suffer the consequences. We each have our own weaknesses and too often we give in to temptation. God pleads with us and has explained to us why his way is best but do we listen or go our own way? He wants to shower us with blessings but none is greater than the peace and contentment he offers in Jesus Christ our Savior and our Lord.

Heavenly Father I am thankful that you love me. You have blessed me in more ways than I can possibly count or even know. You have delivered me from so many hard times, given peace in the midst of trials and opened the way when I didn’t know where to go. Thank you and praise your Holy Name! Use me to help others live for you as I seek to be more devoted to you. Keep me from ever thinking that I have all the right answers in myself but also from ever thinking that you don’t have them all for me. Forgive me when I fail. Thank you for giving your inerrant word. Give me wisdom to use it daily. I pray in the name of Jesus.
