Daily Devotional: Psalms 106:1-6

Ps 106:1-6

1 Praise the LORD. Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. 2 Who can proclaim the mighty acts of the LORD or fully declare his praise? 3 Blessed are they who maintain justice, who constantly do what is right. 4 Remember me, O LORD, when you show favor to your people, come to my aid when you save them, 5 that I may enjoy the prosperity of your chosen ones, that I may share in the joy of your nation and join your inheritance in giving praise. 6 We have sinned, even as our fathers did; we have done wrong and acted wickedly.

Eph 5:1-2

1 Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children 2 and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

Our God is infinite and is immutable. He is infinite in knowledge, in wisdom, in power and in majesty. God is love but he is a jealous God who is described as a consuming fire for those who reject him. Our minds cannot grasp the infinite and while we define “immutable” as unchangeable, we cannot really relate to it. We are bound with time but God is eternal. We are bound by space but he created all the space we know, plus more. Not only do we not fully understand the nature of God, we cannot even properly describe him. But we are to be like him.

In his infinite wisdom, he has told us to pattern ourselves after him and after his Son, Jesus Christ. While we will never be love as he is, we can learn to love as he loves us. We can be holy and learn to hate sin. In our weakness and our constant change, we can learn to trust him and his immutable word.

From his love for us flows his compassion, his mercy and his grace. It is from these that he gave his Son to die for our sins so that we might be forgiven and thus counted righteous so we can have eternal life with him. But in his love, he warns us about the dangers and consequences of sin. Because of his love he disciplines us and trains us to be more like him. His love causes him to seek and provide only what is best for us that we might have eternal life. Praise the LORD!

O Lord God, creator and giver of life, I am humbled by trying to understand you and your nature. I need your wisdom every day and I need your Holy Spirit to help me be more like you in all things. Fill my mind, my heart and my soul with your matchless love so I will love you completely and learn to love others, even when I don’t feel they deserve it. Help me to know how to keep my mouth shut when I don’t need to speak so that I don’t gossip or slander others. Give me courage to say what needs to be said to encourage others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
