Daily Devotional: Psalms 105:37-45

Ps 105:37-45

37 He brought out Israel, laden with silver and gold, and from among their tribes no one faltered. 38 Egypt was glad when they left, because dread of Israel had fallen on them. 39 He spread out a cloud as a covering, and a fire to give light at night. 40 They asked, and he brought them quail and satisfied them with the bread of heaven. 41 He opened the rock, and water gushed out; like a river it flowed in the desert. 42 For he remembered his holy promise given to his servant Abraham. 43 He brought out his people with rejoicing, his chosen ones with shouts of joy; 44 he gave them the lands of the nations, and they fell heir to what others had toiled for--45 that they might keep his precepts and observe his laws. Praise the LORD.

Matt 6:33-34

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

The estimates for how many were in Israel when they left Egypt range from just over one million to somewhere over three million. The census count was 603,000 males between thirty and fifty years old (plus 22,000 males of Levi). Think for a moment the task of feeding this many people on a daily basis and providing enough water for their drinking and other needs. Remember that they had none of the modern conveniences we take for granted today.

God sent them bread from heaven called manna; enough to eat each day except on the Sabbath. On Friday he sent a double amount for them to be able to eat on the Sabbath without going out to gather it. They got tired of this and demanded they have meat so he sent enough quail for this entire group. When they became thirsty, he opened a rock and water flowed out, enough water for them all.

When we trust God and we live according to his will, he will also take care of our needs on a daily basis. Jesus said that a man’s life does not consist in the things he possesses, even if he has an abundance of things. Our life is to be about Jesus and bringing glory to God, and in serving him we will serve others all around us.

Heavenly Father it is such a blessing to be able to share what you have given me, both the physical blessings and the spiritual blessings in Jesus Christ. Give me a pure heart and a ready mind to yield to your will. Give me fortitude to stand for your truth but never stubborn or closed-minded. Give me a hatred for sin but a genuine love for the sinner. When in my understanding I disagree with someone, keep me from being dogmatic or disagreeable. Put me where you want me and use me to do your bidding. I come to you in the name of Jesus.
