Daily Devotional: Psalms 78:17-24

Ps 78:17-24

17 But they continued to sin against him, rebelling in the desert against the Most High. 18 They willfully put God to the test by demanding the food they craved. 19 They spoke against God, saying, "Can God spread a table in the desert? 20 When he struck the rock, water gushed out, and streams flowed abundantly. But can he also give us food? Can he supply meat for his people?" 21 When the LORD heard them, he was very angry; his fire broke out against Jacob, and his wrath rose against Israel, 22 for they did not believe in God or trust in his deliverance. 23 Yet he gave a command to the skies above and opened the doors of the heavens; 24 he rained down manna for the people to eat, he gave them the grain of heaven.

Acts 7:35-36, 39

35 "This is the same Moses whom they had rejected with the words, 'Who made you ruler and judge?' He was sent to be their ruler and deliverer by God himself, through the angel who appeared to him in the bush. 36 He led them out of Egypt and did wonders and miraculous signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea and for forty years in the desert. 39 "But our fathers refused to obey him. Instead, they rejected him and in their hearts turned back to Egypt.

If we could only see what God sees! Oh, if we could only know his plan that is working in our lives! But if we knew, we would be walking by sight and not by faith. It is only when we obey him without understanding why, that we learn to trust him. When we accept that he knows best without knowing where we are going or how we will get there, we show our faith in his will. So much happens that we cannot explain, but that is not by accident or luck (good or bad), it is the only way we can show our faith in him. Each time our trust becomes stronger.

The more we devote ourselves to doing his will, just for the sake of obedience, the more we will find the joy in serving him. By doing this we take our eyes off of ourselves and begin to look to Jesus for our strength, and as we look at others to see the many opportunities to serve him by serving them. It is only when we deny self that we can allow the fruit of the Spirit to flourish in our lives.

Heavenly Father, it is with humility that I come before you but with gratitude for all you have done for me and continue to do for me every day. I am so thankful to be your child and to know my sins have been forgiven. Create in me a pure heart, clean hands and a will to be like you in every way. Thank you for the peace and joy that comes from serving you. Lord, I see so much evil in the world and so many who refuse to serve you. Help me change this by reaching one person with your life changing gospel. I pray in the name of Jesus my Savior and my Lord.
