Daily Devotional: Psalms 74:12-17

Ps 74:12-17

12 But you, O God, are my king from of old; you bring salvation upon the earth. 13 It was you who split open the sea by your power; you broke the heads of the monster in the waters. 14 It was you who crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave him as food to the creatures of the desert. 15 It was you who opened up springs and streams; you dried up the ever flowing rivers. 16 The day is yours, and yours also the night; you established the sun and moon. 17 It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.

Col 1:15-18

15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. 17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

No matter what happens to us in this life, we have a God, a King, a Savior, a brother and a dear friend who not only knows what we are going through (he has been here and faced it also), but we have such a one who made us and brought us into existence. How can any problem be too big for him to handle? In conjunction with the Father, all we know in this life was conceived in his mind and spoken into being. It is by his power that the sun comes into view each morning and the moon appears with the stars at night. It is his love and care that feeds the animals in the wild, clothes the flowers with beauty and gives the song to the birds to sing.

All of this was done so we can have the opportunity to live with God in eternity in bodies that don’t wear out and minds that are forever clear. It is beyond our ability to fathom the majesty of God in his glory. But we are told that we will be given glorified bodies and we will be like him in some way! No wonder Paul said that the glory of that day will far exceed any suffering we face in this life!

As we face today, we need to find ways to be like him in our hearts and to show his love and honor his name to all those around us. We can rejoice in the middle of our troubles and give thanks for all he has done and is doing for us today. We praise God and show our love for Jesus as we live according to his will.

O Lord God, I stand in awe as I see the stars, feel the heat of the sun, hear the waves of the ocean and enjoy the songs of the birds. While “nature” is wonderful, it is your wisdom and power that created it all that is truly majestic. Thank you for allowing me to be born in the time and place where I am today. Thank you for the wonderful friends you have given me and the many opportunities you give me to help others in service to you. Help me not get caught up in things of this world but rather, to use them to your glory. I pray in the name of Jesus my King.
