Daily Devotional: Psalms 62:1-6

Ps 62:1-6

1 My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. 2 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. 3 How long will you assault a man? Would all of you throw him down--this leaning wall, this tottering fence? 4 They fully intend to topple him from his lofty place; they take delight in lies. With their mouths they bless, but in their hearts they curse. Selah 5 Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him. 6 He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will not be shaken.

John 16:30-33

30 Now we can see that you know all things and that you do not even need to have anyone ask you questions. This makes us believe that you came from God." 31 "You believe at last!"  Jesus answered. 32 "But a time is coming, and has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home. You will leave me all alone. Yet I am not alone, for my Father is with me. 33 "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

Whatever we face in life, Jesus is our friend, our brother and wants what is best for us. He will walk beside us and help us overcome every trial. There is nothing we will encounter that he has not already faced and overcome for himself. As long as we are in him and trusting in him we can win the battles of life.

How was Jesus able to overcome all his trials? He trusted his Father in heaven. He also spent a lot of time in regular prayer. When he had decisions to make, he prayed. When he had sorrow, he prayed. When he knew he was going to face a new temptation, he prayed. When he was tired from his labors, he prayed. When he needed extra help, God would send an angel to strengthen him.

The same God and Father who helped him will help us today. He will never allow us to be tempted beyond what we are able to bear, but with every temptation will send a way of escape. He has promised to give us that extra strength when we need it. He gives wisdom from above when we ask. He picks us up when we fall and forgives when we fail. We must trust, pray and seek to live for him.

Our Father in heaven, Holy and Great is your name. Your majesty is above the heavens and encompasses the earth. Your glory is beyond my ability to grasp and your wisdom far beyond my understanding. Thank you for revealing yourself and your will to me in your word. Thank you for declaring your existence in all creation that surrounds me. Give me greater faith to trust you in all things. Help me show my faith by obeying your word without arguing about it or trying to change it to suite me and my thinking. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and King.
