Daily Devotional: Psalms 49:1-9

Ps 49:1-9
1 Hear this, all you peoples; listen, all who live in this world, 2 both low and high, rich and poor alike: 3 My mouth will speak words of wisdom; the utterance from my heart will give understanding. 4 I will turn my ear to a proverb; with the harp I will expound my riddle: 5 Why should I fear when evil days come, when wicked deceivers surround me--6 those who trust in their wealth and boast of their great riches? 7 No man can redeem the life of another or give to God a ransom for him--8 the ransom for a life is costly, no payment is ever enough--9 that he should live on forever and not see decay.

Titus 3:3-8
4 But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, 6 whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, 7 so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

What can we pay God to redeem our souls? How can we live forever? Jesus said that he was the only way to God. Paul says in many places that our redemption is by God’s grace and not our own works or doing. One song we sang at my dad’s funeral and is scheduled to be sung at my mother’s memorial service is “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness.” Jesus said that when we have done all we are commanded to do, we are still unworthy servants.

When we commit our lives in faith to God and we turn from sin and self, and we are baptized into Christ, we rise as totally new persons. We then have been renewed by the Holy Spirit and justified by God’s grace. Jesus became sin for us that we might become the righteousness of God in him. So, there is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

It is with this assurance that we live for him and seek to do his will in every facet of our lives. It is his strength that carries us when we are weak and his love that convicts us when we are out of his will. We are his and he is ours.

Thank you, heavenly Father, for your wonderful love and provision made so I can be your child. Thank you for the assurance you give in your word. Thank you for your Holy Spirit who lives in me to give me wisdom, correct me when I am wrong and move me to do that which you want me to do. Thank you for the power that he provides in my life when I face trials, temptations, doubts and fears. Use me to reach those who are seeking you and to encourage those who need help along the way of life. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and Savior.
